Dennis Bickmeier, director of the Henrico Sports & Entertainment Authority, expressed pride in seeing the vision come to life. "People are amazed by the uniqueness of this building," he said, highlighting its state-of-the-art amenities and versatile design.The center's success can be attributed to its strategic location and world-class facilities. Within months of opening, it hosted the Atlantic 10 women’s basketball championship, drawing over 16,000 spectators over five days. This event marked a significant milestone, showcasing the center's capability to host large-scale competitions. Bickmeier acknowledged the trust placed by organizations like the Atlantic 10 and NCAA, which took a leap of faith to bring their events to Henrico.

Economic Impact and Community Engagement

Beyond its role as a sports venue, the center has made a substantial impact on the local economy. Danny Bonifas, director of sports and events at Richmond Region Tourism, emphasized that the facility has become a significant draw for events in the Richmond area. "This multipurpose building presents unique opportunities for various groups to utilize it," Bonifas noted. The influx of visitors has not only boosted tourism but also provided local residents with access to top-tier sporting events without the need to travel long distances.Community engagement has been a key focus for the center. During its first anniversary, Henrico partnered with ESPN Richmond to organize a holiday donation drive, collecting sports gear for the Central Richmond Salvation Army. The event featured the inaugural "Battle of the Badges" basketball game between county police and fire divisions, fostering camaraderie and support within the community.

Expanding Horizons and Future Plans

Looking ahead, Henrico is poised for further expansion in its sports and events scene. Plans include the GreenCity development, which will introduce another new arena, along with two restaurants and two hotels to complement the existing center. "We are now firmly on the map from a sports entertainment standpoint," he remarked. In April, it welcomed the National Wheelchair Basketball Association’s adult and junior national championship tournaments, featuring over 1,100 players competing for national titles.
